Jason's Case: Summary of Police Allegations
Early in the morning on a fall day, police received a call from a house in a rural area. The caller was asking for assistance for one of his neighbours, Jason. The caller told police that Jason had visited his home and insisted he call 9-1-1 because he had located two poachers driving all tertian vehicles (ATVs) and that he was intending to hold them at gun point until police arrived. Jason showed his neighbour that the .22 caliber rifle he was holding was not loaded before he departed the house.
When police arrived, Jason approached the officers while carrying his rifle. An officer stopped him briefly and spoke with him about the ATV drivers.
A few minutes later, police received another 9-1-1 call, this time from one of the ATV drivers. The man calling claimed that he had just been held up at gun point and robbed of $70 dollars.
Officers recorded statements from the ATV drivers. The statements revealed that one of the driver’s recalls hearing someone screaming and then seeing a man, Jason, running towards them with a flashlight in one hand and gun in the other. As Jason approached the ATV drivers, he shouted at the drivers. In an attempt to diffuse the situation, one of the drivers offered to give Jason anything he wanted. Jason took $70 and allowed the three drivers to leave.
Later in the night, while Jason was providing a statement to a police officer, the conversation was ended by another officer who arrived on the scene and placed Jason under arrest. In a statement, Jason said that he only asked for money to stall the ATV drivers, who he believed to be poachers.
